Muladhara: Root Frequency of Belonging
Survival, safety, place, lineage — the ground on which every other band stands.
Learning objectives
25 min · 793 words
- ◆Locate Muladhara anatomically and functionally, and name its element, bija, and petal count.
- ◆Explain the polyvagal correlate of root safety.
- ◆Run a 5-minute daily root grounding practice for at least seven days.
Traditional Transmission
TraditionalMuladhara sits at the base of the spine. Its element is earth; its bija is LAM; its yantra is a yellow square within four red petals. It governs survival — physical safety, shelter, food, place, lineage, and belonging.
Contemporary Evidence
EvidencePolyvagal theory (Porges, 2011) locates the social engagement system in the ventral vagal circuit, whose foundation is the dorsal vagal — the primitive safety response that must feel held by the environment before higher regulation is available. Somatic Experiencing (Levine) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Ogden) both use root-focused body practices.
Historical Context
HistoricalThe primacy of Muladhara in ascent practice is documented in the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15th c.), and the Gheranda Samhita (17th c.). To attempt higher awakening without root stability was said to produce ungrounded siddhi.
KAfrequency Application
KAF OriginalKAfrequency teaches root coherence as four legs: body, place, lineage, and provision. Correcting the thinnest leg unlocks the whole band.

Reflect before you answer
Saved to your Journal1. Of the four legs (body, place, lineage, provision), which is your strongest, and which is thinnest?
2. Recall a moment when your nervous system dropped into genuine safety.
3. Design a 5-minute daily root practice you can actually keep for 7 days.
