Attention is the gate

Evidence
Nothing enters long-term memory without passing through attention. Divided attention during encoding reduces later recall dramatically — sometimes to chance level. Craik and colleagues (1996) showed that adults performing even a simple secondary task while studying remembered far less of the study material than adults who studied without interruption. This is why the same hour of study can produce vastly different learning depending on how attention was spent. An hour of focused study is often worth several hours of interrupted study.

The measured cost of multitasking

Evidence
Most 'multitasking' during study is really rapid task-switching, and it carries a real cost. Rosen and colleagues (2013) observed college students studying and found that on average they lasted about six minutes before switching to something else — usually a message, social media, or a browser tab. Students who switched more learned less on later tests. Mayer (2009) and other researchers on multimedia learning have documented similar patterns: irrelevant background media, especially with lyrics or narration, reduces comprehension by competing for the same limited resource.

Designing a study environment

A study environment is engineered, not stumbled into. The rules are simple and enforceable. - Notifications off. Phone in another room or in a drawer. - One canonical source per topic. Close every unrelated tab. - Consistent time and place if possible. The environment carries the attention. - One task at a time. Multitasking during study is negative practice. - Breaks that release attention, not that consume it — walk, breathe, look out a window. The environment does most of the work. Willpower is a poor substitute for design.

The practice: one focused session

Choose one topic. Book a 45-minute block. Notifications off, phone away, one source open. Study with full attention. Afterward, write briefly: what did you cover, what do you now remember without looking, how did the focus feel. Compare with a typical interrupted study session. Most people find the focused session produces more learning than two or three interrupted ones. That is the KAfrequency case for design: the environment gives you back multiples of the hour you invested in setting it up.
