Defined vs. Undefined Centers

Consistency, conditioning, and where you take in the world

Learning objectives

22 min · 45 words

  • Explain what defined and undefined mean structurally in the bodygraph
  • Predict how a defined center behaves consistently vs. how an undefined center amplifies
  • Apply conditioning to a real relationship or environment in your life

What Definition Actually Means

Traditional
A Center is defined when at least one full Channel connecting it to another Center is activated by gates from both ends. Definition is colored in on the chart. Undefined (white) Centers have no such completed channel and therefore no consistent, self-generated frequency there.

Defined = Consistent, Undefined = Amplified

Traditional
Defined Centers broadcast a consistent frequency you can rely on and that others feel from you. Undefined Centers take in the defined Centers of anyone nearby and amplify them — often up to 200%. This is why you can feel calm alone and anxious in a crowd.

Conditioning is Not the Enemy

KAF Original
Conditioning is the mechanic through which undefined Centers learn. The problem is not that you take in others' energy; the problem is that the mind mistakes the amplified signal for a permanent identity. Definition literacy separates this-is-mine from this-is-the-room.

An Evidence-Adjacent Analogy

Evidence
Emotional contagion — the well-documented phenomenon by which moods spread through groups — offers a partial analogue to HD's conditioning claim. Contagion research does not validate specific Center mechanics but supports the broader intuition that others' states measurably shape ours.

Scientific context

Evidence

Emotional contagion research offers a partial analogue without validating specific mechanics.

Historical context

Historical

The defined/undefined distinction has been foundational since the earliest HD trainings.

Traditional context

Traditional

Undefined Centers are the site of the not-self when the mind identifies with the amplified signal.

Reflect before you answer

Saved to your Journal

1. Which defined Centers do others most often comment on as consistent about you?

2. Where do you mistake the room for who I am?

3. Design one environment change that would reduce misidentification with an amplified signal.
