Strategy and Authority

The two-step decision engine of Human Design

Learning objectives

20 min · 50 words

  • Explain the difference between Strategy and Authority in your own words
  • Identify the seven common inner Authorities and which Center each is rooted in
  • Design a 30-day experiment for deciding from Authority rather than mind

Strategy vs. Authority

Traditional
Strategy is the outer choreography — how you engage the world (inform, respond, wait for invitation, wait a lunar cycle). Authority is the inner confirmation — the specific bodily channel through which a clean yes or no arrives. Strategy sets the stage; Authority delivers the line.

The Seven Common Authorities

Traditional
Emotional (Solar Plexus defined): wait through the wave. Sacral: respond in the moment with the gut sound. Splenic: the quiet, one-time-only intuitive hit. Ego: what the willpower actually wants. Self-Projected: decide by talking it out. Mental/Environment: decide in dialogue with a trusted sounding board. Lunar (Reflectors): sleep on it for a full lunar cycle.

Why the Mind is Not Your Authority

KAF Original
The mind is designed as an outer authority — a lamp for others, not a compass for the self. When the mind decides for you, decisions tend to be reactive, comparative, and future-anxious. Authority relocates the decision into a slower bodily channel with access to more information than the narrating mind.

Cross-checking with Neuroscience

Evidence
Research on interoception (Craig, Damasio, Porges) shows that bodily signals — heart rate variability, gut sensations, breath rhythm — feed into decision-making circuits and often know before the cortex articulates it. This validates the general strategy of consulting the body before the story, without validating specific HD Authorities.

Scientific context

Evidence

Interoception research supports consulting the body before the mind.

Historical context

Historical

Strategy and Authority were positioned as the minimum experiment of Human Design.

Traditional context

Traditional

No other piece of HD should be taken on belief; test through Strategy and Authority first.

KAF Original

KAf frames Authority as relocating decisions into a slower bodily channel with more signal.

Reflect before you answer

Saved to your Journal

1. Recall your last three significant decisions. Which were made from the mind, and which from the body?

2. What would waiting through the wave look like practically in your work?

3. Design one 30-day decision experiment: trigger, pause, check-in.
