The word m3ˁt (Ma''at) is attested from the Old Kingdom onward in temple inscriptions, funerary texts, and legal documents. In the courts of the vizier, judgments were rendered ''according to Ma''at'' — a documented procedural standard. The Instruction of Ptahhotep (c. 2400 BCE) treats Ma''at as the measure by which speech and conduct are weighed.
